Applicability of Demirjian's method of age assessment in children of Davangere.
AR Prabhakar, AK Panda, OS Raju
June 2002, 20(2):54-62
The assessment of age is an important facet in providing information in demographic studies and is of clinical use to diagnose and plan the treatment. The objective of this study was to determine whether the standards of dental maturation given by Demirjian et al are applicable to Davangere children and to assess the relationship between the obtained dental age and skeletal age. The study group comprised of 151 healthy children of 6-15 years age. It was found that Davangere children were dentally more advanced. Demirjians method gave an over estimation of 1.20 +/- 1.02 years and 0.90 +/- 0.87 years in males and females respectively. The obtained dental age was found to be different from the skeletal age. It may be concluded that Demirjians method of dental maturation is not applicable to the children of Davangere.

R Rekha, SS Hiremath, S Bharath
June 2002, 20(2):63-7
The purpose of the present study was to describe the oral health status and treatment requirements and to study the association between dental caries and mental illness in a group of hospitalized psychiatric patients.A total of 326 psychiatric patients were examined and compared with 156 normal persons of comparable age and sex. 75.5% of the psychiatric patients exhibited caries experience with significantly higher DMFT and DMFS compared to the 66% in controls. Stepwise regression analysis demonstrated that DMFT was related to age, type of the ward and duration of mental illness. Periodontal diseases were significantly higher among psychiatric patients than controls. Higher proportion of psychiatric patients were suffering from TMJ disorders. Further, extensive dental treatment requirements were observed among these patients.

VN Prasad, HS Chawla, A Goyal, K Gauba, P Singhi
June 2002, 20(2):73-80
Thirty children aged 8-13 years with epileptic disorders and receiving mono-drug therapy with Phenytoin, were selected from the Departments of Pediatrics and Neurology of PGIMER, Chandigarh to evaluate the development of gingival overgrowth induced by phenytoin over a period of six months. These children were evaluated at baseline at three monthly intervals for a period of six months for plaque (Silness and Loe, 1964), gingivitis (Loe and Silness, 1963) and probing depth of the gingival sulcus. Gingival overgrowth was noted as and when it developed using modified version of Harris and Ewalt Index, 1942. No attempt was made to modify the childrens' prevailing oral habits. The results indicated that gingival overgrowth in 57% of the children was in the mesio-distal dimension of the gingival papillae and occurred within six months of initiation of therapy with Phenytoin.

Retentive [correction of Preventive] efficacy of glass ionomer, zinc phosphate and zinc polycarboxylate luting cements in preformed stainless steel crowns : a comparative clinical study.
VI Khinda, N Grewal
June 2002, 20(2):41-6
This study was undertaken to assess the efficacy of three luting cements, namely, glass ionomer, zinc phosphate and zinc polycarboxylate in retainng the preformed stainless steel crowns in-vivo. Twenty subjects, with an indication for restoration of three primary molars with stainless steel crowns, were selected. Sixty teeth were taken up for the study, and twenty crowns were cemented with each of the three luting cements. After an eight month follow up the crowns were assessed for their presence/ absence or "rocking". Statistical analysis was done using Chi-square test. The results have shown no significant difference in retentivity of stainless steel crowns with the use of either of the three luting agents.
