Cephalometric evaluation of Class II malocclusions in transitional dentition. |
p. 127 |
S Kapoor, DN Kapoor, JN Jaiswal PMID:12396087Studying malocclusion during active growth period is important because this period has the maximum impact on dentofacial structures. The present study comprises of computerised cephalometric evaluation of 100 North Indian children in the age group of 9-12 years, with 50 children in normal occlusion group. The samples were segregated according to sex with 25 females and 25 males in each group. It was concluded from the study that changes or deviations in SNB, Saddle, Articular and Gonial angles are the potential indicative factors in the development of a class II malocclusion and that class II pattern is associated with short and posteriorly placed mandible in relation to the cranial base. |

p. 134 |
N Kalra, D Srivastava, A Goswami, A Narang, U Rani PMID:12396088Melanotic Neuroectodermal Tumour of Infancy is a rare tumour. Prompt recognition of such a case is essential for the Pediatric Dentist Presented here is a case of a four and a half month old child who reported in the dental out patient department of Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital with a swelling in the right anterior maxillary ridge region. |

A comparative evaluation of sealing ability of restorative materials used for coronal sealing after root canal therapy. |
p. 137 |
BS Suprabha, P Sudha, M Vidya PMID:12396089In the past few years the importance of coronal seal following root canal therapy has been emphasised. Adhesive restorative materials have been used, considering their good bond strength and their sealing ability. In this study, the sealing ability of resin modified glass ionomer has been compared with composite resin used with fifth generation bonding agent (in vitro), using methylene blue dye penetration method. Resin modified glass ionomer showed greater leakage than composite resin, although it was not statistically significant. Further studies are needed to asses the sealing efficacy in clinical situations. |

Mandibular midline supernumerary tooth : a case report. |
p. 143 |
SA Sharma PMID:12396090Occurrence of a supernumerary tooth in the mandibular incisor region is uncommon. This report describes a rare case of mandibular midline supernumerary tooth causing crowding in the anterior region. The supernumerary tooth was extracted. |

Incontinentia pigmentii acromians with seizure disorder : a case report. |
p. 145 |
A Kumar, S Kuriakose PMID:12396091Incontinentia pigmentii acromians (IPA) is a bizarre, irregularly shaped leukoderma of the trunk and extremities, characterized by marble cake-like whorls or streaks of hypopigmentation whose distribution can be unilateral or bilateral. Mode of inheritance is most consistent with an autosomal dominant type and in majority of the cases, one or more anomalies are present involving dermatological, dental and ocular disorders. A case of a female child, aged 2 1/2 yrs, referred from Pediatric neurology department, Medical College, Trivandrum with Incontinentia pigmentii acromians and seizure disorder is reported. Hamartomatous dental cusps and single maxillary central incisors have been associated with Incontinentia pigmentii acromians. A case of Incontinentia pigmentii acromians with hypoplastic teeth and tongue abnormalities is presented. |

Early treatment of skeletal Class III : a case report. |
p. 148 |
S Maheshwari, ND Gupta PMID:12396092Skeletal class III malocclusion is a growth related facial deformity which increases if left untreated. Skeletal class III malocclusion should be corrected as soon one recognises the initial signs. Mixed dentition period is the time of greatest opportunity for occlusal guidance and growth modulation. A case of skeletal class III malocclusion in mixed dentition is presented, which was treated with a Delaire face mask therapy to modulate the craniofacial growth and to achieve a balanced profile. |

Prevention of caries by pulsed CO2 laser pre-treatment of enamel : an in-vitro study. |
p. 152 |
A Lakshmi, D Shobha, L Lakshminarayanan PMID:12396093The aim of the study was to assess the caries inhibitory potential of carbon dioxide laser and explore the effect of the number of pulses used to correlate caries inhibition. Caries free human mandibular molars were irradiated with carbon-dioxide laser of wavelength 10.6 microm at 5, 15, 25, 50 and 100 pulses. Simulated caries lesions were allowed to form by immersing the teeth in artificial caries medium for three weeks. Thin sections of 75 microns were obtained by using hard tissue microtome. These sections were observed under polarizing microscope, caries lesions were identified and their depth was measured. These values were subjected to statistical analysis. The results showed that carbon-dioxide laser irradiation can inhibit caries like lesion upto 82.7% and it was optimal at 25 pulses. |

Garre's osteomyelitis : a case report. |
p. 157 |
N Eswar PMID:12396094Garre's Osteomyelitis is a distinctive type of chronic osteomyelitis associated with gross thickening of the periosteum of the bones and peripheral reactive bone formation resulting from mild irritation or infections. The condition is seen exclusively in children or young adults. Mandible is more often affected than the maxilla. Clinically it manifests as bony hard, non-tender swelling which is slowly progressive and associated with painful carious tooth. In this article, a case report of a eight year old female is presented along with complete investigations and treatment. |

Anti microbial activity of dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) : a new chelating agent. |
p. 160 |
N Vineeta, V Singh, S Makkar PMID:12396095Successful outcome of endodontic treatment depends on elimination of bacteria and their products present in the root canal. It has been reported that after careful chemicomechanical preparation, smear layer is formed on the walls of canal, which contains bacteria and their products. Chelating agents, when used during chemicomechanical preparation, remove the smear layer. DMSA--a new chelating agent, when used in root canals, removes the smear layer more than EDTA when used as irrigant in root canals. This study was conducted to determine whether DMSA has anti microbial activity and compare it with EDTA. The results show that EDTA (10% & 15%) had marked anti microbial activity, both on culture plates and in broth. DMSA (10% & 15%) did not show anti microbial activity on culture plates while in broth it had marked activity. |
